A portfolio website is a great way to get noticed by potential employers. You can share so much more than on a resume.
This is one of the most common questions that I get. I’m a firm believer in PMs having an online portfolio.
For every project, share about your process and about how you worked with the rest of the team. Potential employers (and future team members) are looking to know how you contributed to the final product. As a PM you should have had significant impact over how things went.
In my portfolio I shared the methodology used, the framework, how I handled any issues that we faced, I outlined the tech stack and any other technical details, and shared screen shots of the project. Focus on telling a story that lets them know the HOW behind each project.
If you have any testimonials from the people on the projects you’ve managed that’s also great to include. As with any material that you use for your job search, be sure to include a call to action. I like to have Work With Me buttons and Contact forms on my site.
Creating a portfolio website really isn’t hard. It’s one of the many things I encourage my coaching clients to use for their job search. I even help them with deciding what to include, writing the copy, and coming up with the overall marketing strategy for their site. With the number of job seekers out there, you really have to do as much as you can to stand out.
